Carnival in Cairo Quilt

December 2, 2019December 2, 20192 Comments

Where this project started... One evening last winter my partner sent me a link to this webpage with a collection of intriguing pentagonal tilings and a wonderful, inspirational story behind their discovery. The story is that of a woman, Marjorie Rice, who, despite having had just a basic high school math education, got positively obsessed … Continue reading Carnival in Cairo Quilt

Ventures into quilt (block) design

What made me fall in love with modern quilting is the potential to play with graphic design and fabrics at the same time. In this post I will explain the design process that went into my first original block design, the "Organic Diamond" block, which was recently published as "block study" in Modern Monthly by … Continue reading Ventures into quilt (block) design

Overcoming quilting anxiety with a test run

March 31, 2019April 3, 20192 Comments

After finishing my "digging deeper" quilt top, I felt both excited and nervous about quilting it. I was excited, because I wanted to explore and learn techniques that can heighten and add depth to a quilt design. But I also felt nervous, because I still have very little experience and consequently little intuition for what … Continue reading Overcoming quilting anxiety with a test run

“Digging deeper” quilt top design

March 24, 20191 Comment

My projects typically start with a fabric that simply inspires me. When I browse fabric stores, there are typically fabrics call out to me, but I don't always know immediately what they want to be transformed into. Often it's not a single fabric that attracts me, but combinations and the challenge is to figure out … Continue reading “Digging deeper” quilt top design

Bringing order into a scrappy quilt?

March 3, 2019March 3, 20192 Comments

The project I'm going to talk about here started several years ago, on one of many afternoons that I spent sewing at my grandmother's house. My grandmother has sewn garments for decades and has accumulated a huge bag full of scraps. Often I would sit on the floor in her sewing room, empty the bag … Continue reading Bringing order into a scrappy quilt?

Slow stitching while waiting for the vaccine side effects to fade. I'm very grateful to have gotten the shot and now telling myself that having a strong response is a sign that my body is working hard on making antibodies.
Tada, it's me in my quilt coat! Thank you all so much for the positive responses to my last post. It's a bit of a statement garment, but I do like wearing stuff like that. It was a blast to make and my mind has already wandered thinking about more coat options, maybe with one of my quilt pattern designs...
Just in time for spring I got myself a warm and cozy quilt coat 🤣. Well, for a little bit I can wear it as it cools down in the evenings and then all summer at my heavily air conditioned workplace.
It's April! I hope everyone had a nice (Easter) weekend. The weather here in Virginia was gorgeous and as it warmed up, fresh green is starting to cover everything. The air is full of sounds and the smell of spring flowers. A much needed mental boost! (➡️Swipe for some photos, 🐍 warning)
March came and went far too quickly. My goal was to work on and ideally finish this quilt top in March but I throughly failed at that. It's okay. It wasn't meant to be. Somewhere between work stress and Sjogrens fatigue I felt little energy to tackle a multitude of decisions that seem to come up when sewing an improv quilt. I wanted to sew straight, mindless lines, so the quilt coat quilting felt just right. (The coat is of course not finished yet either.)
Must-makes for me are usually tests of new quilt designs. Having vizualized a pattern in my head, on paper or in illustrator, I get sort of itchy to try it out.
Little catch up with #igquiltfest2021: The prompts for days 28 and 29 were "texture" and "favorite finish".
Work in progress...I always work on multiple quilts at once, switching focus multiple times a week. I try to balance, with mixed success, between working on what I feel like and not having a million started quilts.
Happy Saturday! I'm still busy quilting these panels, slowly making progress on my quilt coat. Hopefully by the end of the weekend it'll be far enough to be able to try it on.
I enjoyed reading various tips on quilt binding at #igquiltfest2021 today. I really dislike making binding and machine sewing it on, but I like the hand stitching. My two cents would be to be open to experimentation. For example, you can make the binding an extension of the quilt design as seen here in my #carnivalincairo quilt. It's also worthwhile getting comfortable with mitering odd angles. It's not that difficult and personally I love oddly shaped quilts!
Today was a rainy day, which was perfect for getting these #quiltinthewild photos of this recently completed quilt top, for two reasons. First, it meant low pollen count. Second, this weather was a nice recreation of the winter atmosphere that inspired the quilt in the first place (see second to last photo, taken in December).
Finished just in time: "Balconia", my submission for the @curatedquilts mini quilt challenge. The theme was stripes and balance.
