Carnival in Cairo Quilt

December 2, 2019December 2, 20192 Comments

Where this project started... One evening last winter my partner sent me a link to this webpage with a collection of intriguing pentagonal tilings and a wonderful, inspirational story behind their discovery. The story is that of a woman, Marjorie Rice, who, despite having had just a basic high school math education, got positively obsessed … Continue reading Carnival in Cairo Quilt

Ventures into quilt (block) design

July 21, 2019July 21, 2019Leave a comment

What made me fall in love with modern quilting is the potential to play with graphic design and fabrics at the same time. In this post I will explain the design process that went into my first original block design, the "Organic Diamond" block, which was recently published as "block study" in Modern Monthly by … Continue reading Ventures into quilt (block) design

Overcoming quilting anxiety with a test run

March 31, 2019April 3, 20192 Comments

After finishing my "digging deeper" quilt top, I felt both excited and nervous about quilting it. I was excited, because I wanted to explore and learn techniques that can heighten and add depth to a quilt design. But I also felt nervous, because I still have very little experience and consequently little intuition for what … Continue reading Overcoming quilting anxiety with a test run

“Digging deeper” quilt top design

March 24, 20191 Comment

My projects typically start with a fabric that simply inspires me. When I browse fabric stores, there are typically fabrics call out to me, but I don't always know immediately what they want to be transformed into. Often it's not a single fabric that attracts me, but combinations and the challenge is to figure out … Continue reading “Digging deeper” quilt top design

Bringing order into a scrappy quilt?

March 3, 2019March 3, 20192 Comments

The project I'm going to talk about here started several years ago, on one of many afternoons that I spent sewing at my grandmother's house. My grandmother has sewn garments for decades and has accumulated a huge bag full of scraps. Often I would sit on the floor in her sewing room, empty the bag … Continue reading Bringing order into a scrappy quilt?

Quilted coasters from scrap fabric

January 29, 2018Leave a comment

I mentioned in a previous post that I don't like throwing away potentially useful things and hence have accumulated a large collection of scrap fabric. A fun way to use up scraps, is to piece them together to form a patchwork fabric. I enjoy this a lot, because you get to essentially make your own fabric … Continue reading Quilted coasters from scrap fabric

My first (full size) quilt — part 2

January 8, 2018January 8, 20182 Comments

This is the second post in a series about my first quilt project. In a previous post I described how I assembled four patchwork panels. Here I will describe the process of merging them into a single "sheet", which will later form the front side of a quilt, and how this sheet is then fused to the warm … Continue reading My first (full size) quilt — part 2

Hello #IGQuiltFest2021! I'm Hannah, the human behind @verdigrissewing. What is verdigris, you might ask? It's the pigment or patina you get on brass or copper when it oxidises. You probably have seen this on old statues or copper-covered roofs. The color is a beautiful turquoise and one of my favorites (though color favorites are hard).
It's March (already?). That's one year into the pandemic (at least this is when I started working from home last year). I can't wait for the day that I get a vaccine and travel to see my family! Probably still months away...
Another month is nearly over and it was a busy one. Quiltcon, despite being virtual and thus no travel being involved, felt quite intense and left me with so many new WIPs... But I throughly enjoyed learning new techniques and stepping out of my comfort zone a bit.
This is what's currently on the design wall: A project started in an awesome workshop by Maria Shell @talesofastitcher on "Linear Blocks: Line into shape", which I took at #quiltcontogether.
Quiltcon day 3: Besides working on the Linear Blocks, I spent some time today with Sandra Lee Johnson @sandrajohnsondesigns and an old pair of Jeans, that I'm trying to give new life with a visible mending technique. It was great virtually meeting Sandra as well as some other participants in a life Q&A. I think hand stitching just goes so nicely with chatting and connecting with other stichers. Sandras shared lots of tips and tricks and her love and excitement for patching and visible mending, which was contagious!
This evening I'm spending with Maria Shell @talesofastitcher, who put together a virtual workshop on strip-pieced blocks called "Linear Blocks: Line into shapes". I'm only about 30 min in so far and I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience!
While there are things I miss about the in person Quiltcon experience, I'm enjoying the virtual lecture and workshop format so far. It's nice to go at your own pace and with all my materials and tools at my disposition.
Hello #quiltcontogether ! Watching the awards ceremony with so many inspiring quilts (and seeing the work of some familiar faces being recognized) got me hyped for this year's Quiltcon! It looks like @themqg did an amazing job putting the virtual event together. I'm looking forward to a very quilty weekend and meeting lots of you online!
Sunday free motion quilting practice on this charity quilt. It looks less dreary in real life but the light today is grey around here.
Did you know that you can make beautifully wavy quilting lines with the walking foot? It's kind of obvious, but I had not considered it until last weekend when I tried this on a pillow case.
I've been itching to show a photo of this finished #cfrayquilt since a while, but it was tricky to get good pictures with the snow and wind last week (➡️ to see our first attempt in the snow storm 🤣). Well, here is what I got...
Following the saying "Nach dem Fest ist vor dem Fest" (after the holidays is before the holidays), here is my late or very early Christmas-themed table runner finish. All blocks are from the first #quiltmasspectacular in 2019. I used this piece to practice and experiment with hand quilting over the break before tackling the larger Ray quilt.
